Mary stuart, daughter of the english king, was the wife of the dutch stadtholder william ii of orange-nassau. She died when she was only 29 years old. This portrait was made a few years later by hanneman, the most important portrait painter in the hague at the time. Mary is dressed as an 'american' or 'native american', ready for a costume ball.
