Battista guarino or guarini (ferrara, 1435 – ferrara, 1503) was an italian educator and humanist. Son of guarino veronese, he graduated in rhetoric at the university of bologna at the age of 21, and then took his father's place as a teacher in ferrara after his death in 1460. He was a tutor at the este court in ferrara and at the gonzaga court in mantua. In 1459 he wrote a collection of his father's teaching methods and ideals called de ordini docendi et studendi, where he indicated greek and latin as suitable subjects for the education of the scions of princely families, to be taught simultaneously; corporal punishment was to be avoided and it was recommended to motivate the students by establishing a climate of mutual competition between them. He also recommended dedicating oneself to reading aloud, covering topics such as history, geography, philosophy and ethics, as well as literature, especially classical literature. Date: 1602.
