Portrait of a naval officer, 1649, Peter Lely

Portrait of a naval officer, 1649 a portrait of a young officer in the parliamentary navy dating from about 1649. He is shown half-length to right in a black silk doublet with a small white collar and a slashed sleeve. His right gloved hand points towards a ship in the right background which is partially masked by a cliff. The ship in the background wears a st george’s cross at the main. In his 1961 'preliminary descriptive catalogue' of the museum's oil portraits (p. 160) e. H. H. Archibald noted: 'this picture is in poor condition, but is of good quality and may be the remains of an early lely'. He also noted that it is inscribed with the sitter's age and presumed painting date: 'aetatis suae 20, novembris 1649' (top left). Portrait of a naval officer, 1649. Object Type: painting.
