Caption from the catalogue
portrait of a lady, three-quarter-length, in black costume with a white ruff, standing beside a table and holding a pomander. An alternative attribution to an anonymous french artist, known as the monogrammist g. E. C. Has been suggested. This is a portrait painter who appears to have been working in northern france, circa 1560-75, whose quality is comparable with that of pourbus and whose works have been previously attributed to that artist, although his sitters seem to be of a higher, more princely status than those typical in pourbuss work. Examples of his works include a portrait of gabriël cambry in the koninglijke museum voor schone kunsten, antwerp; a portrait of a lady in the hallwylska collection, stockholm; and a portrait of christina of denmark, dowager-duchess of milan and lorraine with mark weiss gallery, london. Object Type: painting. Date: 16th century. Dimensions: height: 53.8 cm (21.1 in); width: 42.5 cm (16.7 in). Medium: oil on panel. Collection: Unidentified location. Pieter Jansz.
