Conradin of swabia and friedrich of baden playing chess. The image illustrates a scene from johann jakob bodmer's poem "conradin of swabia". Conradin, duke of swabia, was taken prisoner by the duke of anjou together with his friend friedrich of baden after the battle of tagliacozzo in 1268. The image shows the moment when the two prisoners had just learned of their death sentence. While conradin maintained his composure and demonstrated strength, friedrich of baden's despair is evident.
