The deck of a ship in action. Jones fires a pistol point-blank at a sailor (left) who stands under the striped american flag, one hand raised towards a rope. Other sailors stand round, two wounded men lie on the deck. Jones rests one foot on the body of a dead man, a cutlass is under his left arm, four pistols are stuck in his belt.
