Wide panoramic view of a mountainous landscape, in the foreground of which a forest path opens up that branches into paths that lead to the vicinity of a farm surrounded by trees. A man covered in a beret and leaning on a pole disappears around one of the bends in the road and, on the side of the nearest path, the presence of a villager and cattle is observed. The comparison with his preparatory sketch (p4359) exceptionally illustrates haes's usual practice in the composition of large-format paintings. The presence of the figures on which the pigment used in the path area has climbed reveals the introduction of these animated elements once the painting was finished, demonstrating once again that the setting was finalized on the fly and that haes still considered it necessary in the representation of a landscape, even when his aesthetic theory advocated a genre defined only by the "essence" of nature. The painting is dedicated to his friend manuel rivadeneyra, famous philologist, editor and printer. It was donated to the museum by manuela rivadeneyra, widow of pí y margall, accepted by royal order of august 29, 1912 (gutiérrez márquez, a. , carlos de haes in the museo del prado 1826-1898, madrid, 2002). Object Type: painting. Genre: landscape painting. Date: circa 1864. Dimensions: height: 104.3 cm (41 in); width: 165.2 cm (65 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Museo del Prado.
