Plate 5 from the first set of thomas daniell's 'oriental scenery. ' as the artist wrote, 'rotas ghur is the most considerable hill fort in this part of india; it is naturally of great strength, and the weaker parts have been assisted by very strong works'. Rohtasgarh was captured from its hindu ruler by sher shah in 1539, who strengthened its defences. It served for a while as the headquarters of raja man singh of amber, when mughal subahdar or viceroy of bengal (1597-1604), and he built a considerable palace within its walls.
