Each picture is captioned with a four-line rhyme and a two-line moral saying in dutch and a four-line french rhyme. The text begins with: 'nothing is zero, poor bastard!' text for the second picture: 'once one is one, jan, where are you going? -'i'll go, says jan, my dear trijn, where women are not curious. Curiosity, bad news awaits you. ' the last picture shows the year 1859: 'do you already know this year number?' includes pictures of a young seafarer, children at the table, busy with toys, gathering, digging, making music and by the fireplace.
