Posthumous portrait of the sevillian ecclesiastic, scholar and bibliographer nicolás antonio (1617-1684), who studied liberal arts at the college of santo tomás in 1635 and later spent time in salamanca and rome. Back in seville, he began writing his most famous work, bibliotheca hispana vetus, in 1672, and bibliotheca hispana nova in 1696, which were an index of spanish writers from the emperor augustus to the 17th century. In this work, which comes from the san acacio library, the scholar appears dressed in a black suit and wearing the red cross of the order of santiago, in which he obtained a habit in 1645 by grant from king felipe iv.
