St. Justa and St. Rufina, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo

St. Justa and St. Rufina, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo

The work represents the virgins and martyrs santa justa and santa rufina, and belongs to the series created by murillo for the church of the capuchin convent in seville, where it was located in the main altarpiece. The saints, who are prototypes of popular sevillian beauty, are one of the painter's most famous paintings, and the sisters are represented with the palms of martyrdom and with some clay vessels alluding to their status as ceramic sellers. In their hands they hold the tower of the seville cathedral, la giralda, because according to tradition they prevented its collapse in the earthquake of 1504. The splendid representations of saints in the capuchins group, the complex plays of light in some scenes, are clear fruits of their artistic maturity. Technical maturity that shines through in the brushstrokes of prodigious ease, vaporous, with which he undoes the forms, announcing the sensitivity of the coming century. Object Type: painting.
