Massacre of the Innocents (Ionian, 17th c., Byzantine museum), Peter Paul Rubens

The icon depicts the massacre of the innocents. The scene reproduces an engraving that in turn copied a painting by peter paul rubens, now in alte pinakothek (munchen), dated between 1635 and 1639. The icon comes from the ionian islands and follows a way of depiction of the massacre that was introduced in the region by the cretan artists of the diaspora who copied flemish engravings. Origin: ionian islands measurement: 66 x 102,5 cm exhibit number: βχμ 01579. Date: 17th century.
