Decemvir appius claudius, one of the college of ten legislators, was inflamed with a secret passion for the daughter of a respected centurion. He conceived a plan to take possession of her by cunning and conspired with one of those who depended on him that he would claim that this girl had previously been a slave and bring the accused to appius, who would pass a sentence in favor of his accomplice.
