El Verano, Mariano Salvador Maella

El Verano, Mariano Salvador Maella

Disguised as a peasant woman and accompanied by reapers, the goddess of the earth, ceres, appears with her attributes, the torch and a sheaf of wheat. The lightning from the sky may allude to zeus, his brother and lover, whose common daughter persephone, kidnapped by hades, lived part of the year in the underworld and the other with her mother. The myth explains the origin of the seasons. Object Type: painting. Date: between circa 1805 and circa 1806. Dimensions: height: 144 cm (56.6 in); width: 80 cm (31.4 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Museo del Prado. Mariano Salvador Maella - Allegory of Summer
