Four people have gathered to play croquet: in the foreground sits fellow artist alfred stevens, in the background paul roudier, a friend of manet. In between are alice lecouvé and victorine meurent, who were models for the impressionists. Manet rarely came as close to the impressionist style of painting as he did here. The provocation was planned: the supposed married couples are the artists and their models - the bourgeois idyll turns out to be an illusion. Object Type: painting. Genre: genre art. Date: 1873.
