A theme often treated by boilly, under the titles the happy spouses, the happiness of the household and ninth month, the work is entitled la tendresse marital in the first catalog which mentions it, that of the pillot sale of 1819, where the painting is described as follows: "interior of an apartment. We see a pregnant woman sitting next to her husband who has one arm draped over his shoulder; they both seem to be enjoying the first signs of the existence of their child. A dog, a table covered with different (sic) accessories add to the interest of this composition which is from the master's best time. Date: between circa 1807 and circa 1810.
