Anonymous portrait of the famous spanish playwright félix lope de vega y carpio (1562-1635). This canvas comes from the collections of the painter valentín carderera, from whom it passed to general romualdo nogués, although between the two or before it belonged to carderera it belonged to the poet manuel josé quintana, and was acquired by josé lázaro galdiano before 1902. Félix lope de vega appears in a talar suit and holding the knight's cross of the order of malta. The attribution of this canvas to the school of the painter eugenio cajes or to cajes himself is due to valentín carderera. Furthermore, the playwright's face is very similar to that of the portrait preserved in the valencia institute of don juan, and in which lope de vega appears more than half-length, and is also closely linked to the one recorded by juan de courbes in the 1630 edition of the laurel of apollo, although it also has a certain resemblance to the one preserved in the hermitage museum in saint petersburg, which has been attributed to luis tristán without conclusive arguments according to some authors. The mediocre quality of this work, which is "somewhat dry" in the opinion of some historians, makes one doubt that it had been executed by an outstanding master, so it is possibly only one of the many copies of the portrait of the playwright "that were seen", already in his time, in the homes of "curious" or tasteful men.
