Looking into Portsmouth Harbour, with two Elco motor launches crossing to Gosport RMG PV3299, William Lionel Wyllie, circa 1916

Looking into portsmouth harbour, with two elco motor launches crossing to gosport this is a view looking north up portsmouth harbour with a spritsail barge coming out under sail and the 'victory ' (1765) still afloat as port flagship in the background, with the union flag at the main. Gosport and the camper & nicholson boat yard are on the left. The two vessels in the foreground are elco motor launches and they are proceeding across the harbour towards the gunboat yard in haslar creek: 510 of these wooden motor launches were built in the united states and delivered to the royal navy between november 1915 and december 1916. The apparent time of day is early morning and the drawing is unfinished, especially a small steam yacht shown to lower right pointing into the harbour, flying a red ensign astern. The smoke from its funnel is easily mistaken for 'victory' firing a salute. Date: circa 1916. Dimensions: 317 mm x 456 mm. Collection: Fine art.
