The idea to paint a picture depicting a view of a monastery in the rays of the setting sun came to levitan when he lived in slobodka near zvenigorod and observed the savvino-storozhevsky monastery at sunset. Two years later, already in plyos, in search of new motifs for paintings, levitan went to yuryevets, and not far from it he saw a small monastery (krivoezersky monastery), the sight of which revived his desire to paint such a picture.
