This series of caricatures mocks the steamships that were used for transportation along the river seine. These ships, which preceded the "bateaux-mouches," were much noisier and produced a lot of black smoke. The caricatures mimic their speed, their smoke, and their unromantic quality (by comparing them, ironically, to venice's gondolas). Date: 4 January 1862. Dimensions: 23 × 22.3 cm (9 × 8.7 in). Medium: engraving. Collection: Brown University Library. Les gondoliers de la Seine, 1862
