Leopold, Prince of Saxe-Coburg- Gotha (1824-84), Henry Pierce Bone, Signed and dated 1839
A copy of the head and shoulders of prince leopold of saxe-coburg-gotha taken from chalon's full-length watercolour dated 1839 (451817). The watercolour shows the prince standing in front of buckingham palace and marble arch, which was sited there from its erection in 1827 until its removal in 1851 to its current position north east of hyde park. Signed, dated and inscribed on the counter-enamel in red paint: prince leopold / of saxe coburg – london / octr. 1839. Painted / by her majesty's command by / henry pierce bone [enamel] / painter to her majesty / from a drawing / by a. E. Chalon. Given to prince albert by queen victoria. Date: Signed and dated 1839.
