Lady Meutas, by Hans Holbein the Younger, circa 1536

Lady Meutas, by Hans Holbein the Younger, circa 1536

Portrait of joan, lady meutas. Black and coloured chalks with wash on pink-primed paper, 28. 3 × 21. 2 cm, royal collection, windsor castle. Joan or jane astley (d. 1577) was the sister of london mercer john astley. She married the courtier peter meutas, who, like holbein, was involved in henry viii's embassies to scout for potential brides. On the right of the drawing is a sketch of interlocked hands wearing rings. The design on lady meutas's oval medallion is similar to one of holbein's designs for a mary magdalen medallion.
