The work represents queen blanca ii of navarre (1424-1464), who was the daughter of king juan ii of aragon and queen blanca i of navarre and first wife of king henry iv of castile. She was imprisoned by her father in the olite castle to prevent her from effectively claiming her right to reign, after the death of her brother carlos. Subsequently, it was handed over to her younger sister leonor and her husband gastón, counts of foix, who claimed the navarrese crown at the cost of eliminating blanca's claims. To avoid this, he made a will ceding his rights over navarre to henry iv of castile, and excluded eleanor and her descendants from such rights, although john ii prevented (illegitimately) the union of navarre and castile from taking place, confirming eleanor as his heir in navarre. Blanca ii probably died of poisoning during her subsequent confinement in the castle of orthez (france). Object Type: painting. Date: circa 1885. Dimensions: height: 250 cm (98.4 in); width: 181 cm (71.2 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Museo del Prado. La reina Blanca II de Navarra (Museo del Prado)
