The virgin mary and saint joseph lean towards the child jesus, naked and on a white cloth on a stone ashlar. Above them, following the text of the new testament, angel musicians praise the newborn, intoning “glory to god in the highest and on earth peace to men in whom he is pleased” and, in the background of the composition, the shepherds are announced of the birth of the messiah, entering the stable from the right of the composition (luke 2, 8-20). This work corresponds to the first stage of the artist's activity in which he shows a strong dependence on juan de borgoña (c. 1470 - 1534), as can be seen in the figures and architecture, with rich renaissance ornamentation. It comes from the monastery of san jerónimo de guisando, where it was placed in the upper cloister. It is the central panel of a station altarpiece from the nativity cycle. The two doors, with the visitation (p00689) – and on its exterior the penitent saint jerome – and the presentation of jesus in the temple (p00687) – originally with the prayer in the garden (p00688) on the exterior – are also preserved in the collections of the prado museum. On the sides, four prophets complete the set – david (p00683), isaiah (p00684), jeremiah (p00685) and habakkuk (p00686) –, four prophets that are currently deposited in the museum of santa cruz in toledo.
