The descent of the holy spirit (the right hand of god protecting the faithful against the demons). Hours of étienne chevalier, illuminated by jean fouquet. New york, robert lehman collection, 1975-1984. Fouquet has resituated the episode from the new testament evoking the descent of the holy spirit on the faithful assiduous in prayer, in a parisian landscape. On the right, the pont saint-michel spans the arm of the seine in front of the petit châtelet. Then come the roofs of the hôtel-dieu and the tower of the bishopric, then the imposing façade of notre-dame. In front of the cathedral stretches the dense district of the rue neuve-notre-dame, where the book trades were practiced. Object Type: book of hours, illuminated manuscript. Genre: religious art.
