La Bourse, Thomas Talbot Bury, 1831

La Bourse, Thomas Talbot Bury, 1831

Construction of the bourse des valeurs began in 1808, immediately following the demolition of the architecturally-damaged couvent des filles saint-thomas. Inauguration of the bourse took place in 1826, though construction was not officially completed until the following year. The rectangular dimensions of the building are 69 meters by 41 meters, and a total of 64 columns (shown here) decorate all four sides. The bourse once housed both the tribunal de commerce and the chambre de commerce. This engraving was created in 1831. Date: 1831. Medium: engraving. Collection: Brown University Library. La Bourse, 1831
