Charles iii (parma), duke of parma (1823 florence-1854 parma), lithograph by josef kriehuber, 1852. Ferdinand charles was the only son of duke charles ii louis of parma (1799−1883) and his wife princess maria theresa (1803−1879), daughter of king victor emmanuel i of sardinia-piedmont and his wife maria of modena. After his father abdicated in his favour, he returned from london to parma in august 1849 under the protection of austrian troops and established a reactionary tyranny that made him so hated that he was stabbed to death in the street in parma by an unknown assailant in march 1854.
