The painting by jacob philipp hackert "the sinking of the russian ship saint eustatius" from the so-called "chesme series" of canvases painted in the 1770s for the chesme hall of the great peterhof palace. Depicts an episode of the battle of chios on june 24 (july 5), 1770 (the first phase of the battle of chesme in the russo-turkish war of 1768-1774). In the foreground are visible the wreckage of the russian battleship saint eustatius, which exploded during a boarding battle with the turkish battleship burj-u-zafer (depicted burning on the left). Date: between 1771 and 1772.
