Ivan Enchev-Vidyu Bulgarian Folk Crosses 392, 29 September 1917

392. Corner of the cemetery in the village. Lower chamurlii, kyustenjansko. Dolls abound, which in many cases replace the stone tombstones. The dolls are made of oak wood, large and massive - from 3 to 6 cm thick. The stone monuments are mostly slabs with engraved zigzag ornaments and carved crosses with the monograms of jesus christ engraved around them. Here, over the graves, there are white flags stuck to the monument, as well as saplings. The flag means that a "working" young person (adolescent) is lying in the grave - a boy or girl who has reached the age when he starts to be useful with his work at home and in the field. A bunch of flowers are tied to the top of the flag; such a bouquet is hurried to the doll on the same occasion. The symbolic meaning of the flags, monuments and saplings is "let the deceased rest under their shadows" (grandfather ivan stoyanov, 81 years old from the village of enikoy). Sketched on 29. Ix. 1917. (item 7, amendment 105. ). Date: 29 September 1917.
