The british were forced to retreat and the town was occupied by german forces. The canadian corps liberated the city during the final days of the war. In the background of this painting, the gothic structures of the town hall and main square of mons are clearly shown. This painting captures belgian civilians and canadian troops celebrating in the town square at mons, a short while after the city's liberation.
