Ivan Enchev-Vidyu Bulgarian Folk Crosses 449, 29 September 1917

449. Grave in the cemetery of the village. Hammamji, northern dobruja. In this village and in the other bulgarian villages around it, the graves in the cemeteries are always surrounded by small stones - debris. At the western end of the grave there is always a doll - male or female, and sometimes behind it a stone slab or a stone cross. There is always a doll in front of the stone monument. The doll is stuck in on the day of the dead person's funeral, and then, if there is an opportunity to put a permanent stone monument - they put it, but the doll is not removed. Dolls from 1860 are found in this cemetery. Most of the time the dolls here have a cross carved on their face and sometimes an inscription. Sketched on 29. Ix. 1917 (t. 7, obr. 104. ). Date: 29 September 1917.
