415. Cemeteries in the village karanasuf, kyustenjan, northern dobruja. In this cemetery you can see on the left three stone monuments above one grave, and to the right of them two and three wooden dolls above separate graves. Dolls with round heads are female - a woman is buried under them, and those with ridged heads or round heads, but with a cap, are male dolls - men are buried under them. In the foreground is a tombstone with a quartered sterna (dimple) carved into the upper wall. In this cistern, when they "overflow" the grave, they pour water or wine "so that the dead get up at night and [to] drink", and when it is filled with water from the rain, for the birds to land there and "change". Sketched on 28. Ix. 1917 (vol. 7, obr. 102. ). Date: 28 September 1917.
