This work, along with the one titled finis gloriae mundi, was commissioned from juan de valdés leal to be placed in the sotocoro (under-choir entryway) of the hospital de la caridad in seville, and, as in the paintings of the vanitas genre, they allude to the banality of earthly life and the universality of death, although they are also united with the primary purpose of the brotherhood of charity of seville, which was to bury the executed and indigent of the city, like other similar existing brotherhoods in spain at that time.
