Meleager and Atalanta, Gerard van Honthorst, 1632

The painting depicts a motif from greek mythology that was very popular in 17th century dutch painting: the hunt for the calydonian boar. When a boar had caused great devastation in calydon, the most famous greek heroes were called upon to take part in a hunt for the animal. The king's son meleager and the huntress atalante also came to the hunt. Since she had inflicted the first wound on the animal, meleager, who was in love with atalante, gave her the hunting trophy.
