Gerrit van honthorst was court painter to stadtholder frederik hendrik and made many portraits of the prince and his wife amalia van solms. He had a large studio in which these compositions were copied – this painting is such a copy. Frederik hendrik was a second cousin of johan maurits. He collected art, including rembrandt.
