HMS Hastings NMM PU6120, Antonio de Simone the Elder, 1815

HMS Hastings NMM PU6120, Antonio de Simone the Elder, 1815

Hms hastings. Port-bow view of hms hastings in the centre of the image, all sails furled. The sea is calm with a clear reflection of the ship. A small boat beside her appears to be transporting people on to the ship. In the distance on the left are several sailboats, whereas on the right are four moored ships with only their hulls and masts visible. The edges of the watercolour are discoloured, most likely due to an acidic mount. In this area of discolouration, in the right foreground, are two buoyant barrels. This picture has the remains of a cut inscription, probably ‘hms hastings 74 guns’. The figurehead is not very like the head shown in other pictures. Date: 1815.
