Hms thetis aground near currituck inlet, north carolina on 23 dec 1794. Boats have been used to carry out 2 kedge anchors to haul the ship off, and these boats are now using lead lines to sound for deeper water. A further boat is hooked on to the stern of thetis. This watercolour was painted by george tobin, one of thetis's lieutenants, and so can be presumed to be technically accurate. Thetis was got afloat again with the assistance of hms cleoptra (seen at anchor in this painting) and taken to gosport, virginia for repair. Date: 1795.
