Hercules Reposing, James Gillray, 1799

See bmsat 9374, &c. Fox, naked and hairy, sits despondently at the foot of a willow tree, from which a lyre hangs by a tricolour ribbon. His eyes are closed, his head is supported on the hand which holds a large book: 'the beauties of st ann's hill'. He sits on the skin of an ass masquerading as a lion (with a lion's tail); before him are the apples of the hesperides, rotten. His club, inscribed 'whig club', lies across a (blunted) arrow and a bow with a broken string. In the background fame staggers from the temple which crowns parnassus. 7 may 1799 hand-coloured etching. Date: 1799. Dimensions: Height: 258 mm; Width: 193 mm. Medium: paper. Depicted People: Charles James Fox. Collection: British Museum. Hercules Reposing (BM 1868,0808.12514)
