Ivan Enchev-Vidyu Bulgarian Folk Crosses 211, October 1916

211. Road sign. In many places throughout northern and southern bulgaria, where the monasteries are located in hidden places in the mountains, behind the bairs in the forest, where the road leading to them intersects with other roads, the inhabitants of the monasteries have placed signs at the crossroads for travelers to go to the holy abode. In some places around the forest they cut crosses on the bark of trees, in other places they stuck stone slabs with engraved or carved crosses on them or engraved images of saints at crossroads and along the road, and in some places they stuck stone crosses with carved inscriptions, indicating the road that leads to the monastery. [the image] represents a landscape around tarnovo - a crossroads where, in addition to the modern signpost, there is another old sign next to it, with a cross carved from marble. On its face is the following inscription: "1879 august 1, way to the monastery stago transfiguration”. Sketched in october 1916. (item 3, table 1. ). Date: October 1916.
