Iusta Funebria Serenissimo Principi Joanni Friderico Brunsvicensium Et Luneburge ... Platte (18), Johann Georg Lange, 20 April 1680
The image comes from the collection of the funeral procession held in 1680 for the ruler of the welfs, duke johann friedrich of brunswick-calenberg, who died in augsburg on december 28, 1679. The hanoverian court councilor and polymath gottfried wilhelm leibniz was involved in designing the image program for the pompous state funeral. In order to capture the event in pictures - and to spread the word - leibniz specially called the engraver johann georg lange back to hanover from hamburg. Lange created a total of more than 80 copperplate engravings to illustrate the work "iusta funebria serenissimo principi joanni friderico brunsvicensium et luneburge: duci a revermo et sermo fratre ernesto augusto episcopo osnabrugensi duci brunsv: et luneb. Persoluta” which was reproduced in the printing shop of the göttingen university printer gottfried kaspar wächter in rinteln. Date: 20 April 1680.
