Genjigumo ukiyo-e awase, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, 1845 (late Edo)

Danshichi kurobei, the fishmonger hero of the play "natsu matsuri" ("the summer festival"), puts a handgrip on otori sagaemon to keep him from bothering a courtesan. Danshichi had promised to look after the courtesan kotoura's welfare, just as genji looked after the welfare of his friend's daughter tamakazura. Date: 1845 (late Edo). Place of creation: Edo (present-day Tokyo, Japan). Dimensions: height: 35 cm (13.7 in); width: 23 cm (9 in). Medium: pigments on mulberry paper. Collection: Walters Art Museum.
