Hans Holbein the Younger - Sir Philip Hoby RL 12210, Hans Holbein the Younger, circa 1532-43

Hans Holbein the Younger - Sir Philip Hoby RL 12210, Hans Holbein the Younger, circa 1532-43

Black and coloured chalks, pen and indian ink on pink-primed paper, 29. 8 × 22. 6 cm, royal collection, windsor castle. The drawing has been rubbed and softened; a fingerprint can be seen on the outline of the shoulder on the left. Sir philip hoby (1505–1558) was a diplomat. He served as ambassador to the court of spain, 1535–36, and later became ambassador to charles v in 1548. Hoby and holbein travelled together on missions to brussels and lorraine to find henry viii a fourth wife. A drawing inscribed "the lady hobbei" may be a portrait of his wife, elizabeth. Date: circa 1532-43.
