The Three Statues of Aegina, Frederick Sandys, 1861
This image illustrated a poem by walter thornbury that relates the mythological story of pluto, or death, who calls upon the aging sculptor chiron. The god’s great cloaked arm enshrouds chiron in preparation for his passing. Sandys’ “durer-inspired” technique imparts an old master quality to this victorian artwork. (see references). Date: 1861. Dimensions: 10.7 × 8.2 in (27.3 × 20.9 cm). Medium: engraving on wood. Collection: Delaware Art Museum. Frederick Sandys - The Three Statues of Aegina
