From My Window, Frederick Sandys, 24 August 1861

This illustration accompanied a poem of the same title by frederick whymper. Sandys captures the essence of the text, which is more of a reverie than a narrative. A beautiful young woman sits dreamily gazing out of a window. Victorian art is filled with such scenes of leisure, since women were largely confined to the domestic sphere during this period. (see references). Date: 24 August 1861. Dimensions: height: 5.4 in (13.8 cm); width: 3.6 in (92 mm). Medium: engraving on wood. Collection: Delaware Art Museum. Frederick Sandys - From My Window
