The hand-writing upon the wall., James Gillray, 24 August 1803

Caricature of napoleon i. (british political cartoon); napoleon and josephine feast on english dishes, including the tower of london and the bank of england, representing the threat to invade. Napoleon looks in horror at the prophetic handwriting on the wall, to which the hand of god is pointing. Above the first consuls head god's other hand holds a pair of scales in which the crown of france weighs heavier than the cap of liberty under which napoleon's despotism has been concealed.
