Floral cartouche around a bust of King Stadholder William III (1650-1702), Daniel Seghers, circa 1660

Seghers, a flemish specialist in painting flowers, often combined his flowers with a stone statue. The bust statue was added later by an unknown artist. The bust represents king william iii, the stadholder of holland who was also king of england. The sprigs of orange blossom and the orange lilies refer to his family name: van oranje. The painting was probably a gift from seghers to constantijn huygens, the stadholder's secretary. It hung in his house, close to the mauritshuis, until the middle of the 19th century. Object Type: painting. Genre: portrait. Date: circa 1660. Dimensions: height: 122.5 cm (48.2 in); width: 107 cm (42.1 in). Medium: painting. Depicted People: William III of England. Collection: Mauritshuis. Bloemencartouche rond een beeld van koning-stadhouder Willem III
