Greenwich Hospital from the NW, and boating on the River Thames RMG PU2201, Samuel Howitt

Greenwich hospital from the nw, and boating on the river thames a view of greenwich hospital from the west, off the old greenwich waterfront around the salutation tavern and garden stairs, before this area was cleared in the 1830s and the pier first built. A number of pleasure boats and other craft fill the foreground, with a small cutter or hoy moored centre left and a man climbing a flag-pole on the right. This may be connected with one of the waterfront inns, as there is another such pole beyond. Only the river fronts of the queen anne and king charles courts of the hospital are visible (left and right), not the domes. 'howitt' is inscribed across the bottom of the sail of the boat on the right, presumed to be samuel howitt, 1756 -1822. For an uncoloured copy see pad2200. Greenwich hospital from the nw, and boating on the river thames. Date: late 18th century. Dimensions: Mount: 136 mm x 199 mm. Collection: Fine art.
