Annunciation, El Greco, between 1603 and 1605

Annunciation, El Greco, between 1603 and 1605

The work, titled the annunciation, represents the moment when the archangel saint gabriel announced to the virgin mary that she would be the mother of jesus christ, the messiah. It is a simplification of the one he made years before for the colegio de doña maría de aragón. On a neutral background he places the two main figures of the scene, the archangel on the left side adapting to the curvature of the canvas and the virgin on the right, surprised while praying. As the axis of the composition is the lectern and the dove of the holy spirit that descends in all its glory and becomes the illuminating focus of the scene. We find in this peculiar composition a diagonal marked by the eyes of the protagonists and the symbolic dove. Object Type: painting. Genre: religious art. Date: between 1603 and 1605. Dimensions: 128 cm. de diámetro. Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Capilla Mayor del Hospital de la Caridad de Illescas. GRECO Anunciacion
