The portrait, long considered to be a portrait of margaretha tulp (1632-1709), daughter of the famous amsterdam physician nicolaes tulp, was identified by tom van der molen in 2012 as a portrait of his wife suzanna van baerle on the basis of a poem by geeraerdt brandt.
