Johan wilhelm kaiser (1813-1900) was the son of german immigrants johan wilhelm kaiser and anna sebilla liernur. In 1843 he married johanna buisman (1821-1907), daughter of derk buisman and johanna overmars, in zwolle. From 1827 he took drawing lessons at the royal academy of art in amsterdam, where he later became a teacher himself. He worked as a book illustrator, designer and engraver. In 1851 and 1864, for example, he designed and engraved the first and second series of postage stamps for the netherlands and for
dutch east indies. In 1859 he was appointed director of the engraving school. When the rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten was founded in 1870, he became a professor at this institution. In 1873 he also became director of the rijksmuseum. He held both positions until his retirement in 1883. Eight children were born from their marriage. The eldest son and namesake (1847-1920) became a painter. Their youngest daughter aletta catharina (1858-1931) married the leiden professor of physics and later nobel prize winner hendrik antoon lorentz on july 15, 1881. From the mid-nineteenth century, wedding medals with portraits of the bridal couple 'en profile' became popular. Usually the man comes first.
